As a makeup artist I’m always searching for new makeup products to use in my business. Not only am I looking for new products but I also try to improve my makeup skills to make sure I’m up to date with the latest techniques and fashions. As I was looking for new training material, I found a site called the University of Makeup. For those who don’t know, the University of Makeup is an online training program for people who would like to learn how to apply makeup professionally. It is a substitute for makeup courses at regular makeup schools who tend to be too expensive in my opinion.

A few weeks ago I decided to give the Full Makeup Course a go and so in this article I would like to describe my findings and how I rate the University of Makeup. This is basically my review of the University of Makeup and its makeup courses.

They have three makeup courses which are the My Makeup Course, Bridal MakeupCourse and the Full Makeup Course. There are a total of 67 training videos in the full course and 50 of those videos are included in the My Makeup and Bridal Makeup Course. You can check out their Makeup Course Comparison page to see the exact differences. The Full Makeup Course is the only one where you can receive a certificate.

Studying online by watching training videos and reading the makeup course manual may be strange for some. For me it was natural because I’ve learned most of my makeup skills through video training sessions and makeup books. So yes it is nice to sit in a physical class with a makeup teacher but online training is the future. You can certainly learn just as well if not more via online training. You can do everything on your own time and ask their makeup artists any question if you don’t understand something. I love it when I’m able to do 2 or 3 makeup videos everyday and go on with my usual work. This way I can keep my own pace.

There are a total of 67 makeup training videos. It adds up to over 22 hours of video training. It teaches you anything from basic skincare, foundation application to eyebrow tinting and eye shadow application of difference eye shapes etc. To be honest, it is a bit intimidating to see all the training videos which are available. You feel that you never going to get through all of them. But I quickly got into a rhythm and watched 2, 3 or 4 videos everyday. It took me about a month to go though all of them.

You also get a training manual with each course. It contains all the notes that accompany the videos. I printed mine out and made notes on it as I went along. It’s a really nice manual to have even after you’ve completed the training.

If you joined the Full Makeup Course then you can also receive your University of Makeup Certificate. This is nice to have if your clients want to see that you’ve actually studied makeup or when you apply for a makeup job. To receive your certificate you have to complete their practical and theoretical examination. This sounds harder than it is. The theoretical exam was not hard at all. I think it was about 40 multiple choice questions. I then asked a friend if I can do the required looks on her for the practical examination which I also uploaded after I’ve finished the multiple choices. Anneke from the University of Makeup contacted me with a few suggestions with my work. After I made the changes I receive my certificate in a few days.

They also have the training videos on DVD. So if you’re not able to download all the videos due to a slow or limited internet connection then I would suggest getting the DVD set.

I’m very pleased with the quality of the training course. I think it’s a great initiative and a wonderful opportunity for people to learn professional makeup application or becoming a professional makeup artist. It is a fraction of the cost if you want to go to a physical makeup school. I’ve been to a physical school and I honestly think this is just as effective.
